If yes, I love you and I understand what you're going through right now.
If no...
Skulduggery Pleasant is like the book series you always dreamt about. The perfect mish-mash of genres. A beautiful blend of fantasy, crime, war, thriller and comedy. And a dash of romance as you get further on.
I can't compare this series to another, because there is literally nothing else like it. Nothing else I have ever read has reached this level of perfection.
When we start off in the first book, we have our main character; Stephanie Edgley. 12 years old, sharp tongued and longing for a distraction from her boring life.
Enter Skulduggery Pleasant. At first sight, he wears a long coat, a fedora, a large scarf wrapped around the lower half of his face and huge sunglasses covering the remainder. But when his disguise falls off in the first fight scene of the book (the first of many), he is revealed to be a living skeleton. A living skeleton who not only possesses magical abilities such as throwing fire, but it turns out he is a detective by trade.
If you are not yet gripped, let me say it again. A skeleton. Who is alive. And can throw fire. And he solves murders.
Please, if you love books as much as I do and you are constantly searching for new series to get addicted to, just try this first book.
Even if you are put off by the fact that it is aimed at young readers (9-11), know that Derek Landy wrote the series so that each book, like the main character Stephanie, would grow with the readers so that the 2nd book is aimed at 12-14 and so on, until the most recent books are quite young adult and Stephanie is 18 years old.
If you jump on the bandwagon quick enough and you can read them as quick as I can (that's not me bragging, that's me showing how unputdownable these books are), you might finish all 8 books before the FINAL book is released on the 28th August this year.
Please, for the sake of....everything...read these books.
